While many Americans followed & shared micro-targeted Russian disinformation on Facebook calling global warming a hoax. Multi-national oil companies, the US military & Russian oligarchs sought alignment over exploiting Arctic resources.
The Trump administration intended to promote global warming as revealed in the Sept 2018 environmental impact statement accompanying rollback of vehicle fuel economy standards. The administration projected that global temperatures will rise 7 degrees Fahrenheit (about 4 degrees Celsius) while proposing dismantle environmental regulations, giving new life to aging coal plants; allowing oil and gas operations to release more methane into the atmosphere; and preventing new curbs on greenhouse gases used in refrigerators and air-conditioning units.
On May 6th 2019 Secretary of State Pompeo praised the Arctic region’s rapidly shrinking levels of sea ice for its economic opportunities, despite continued warnings about the catastrophic effects of climate change.
“The Arctic is at the forefront of opportunity and abundance,” Pompeo said in remarks in Rovaniemi, Finland. “It houses 13% of the world’s undiscovered oil, 30% of its undiscovered gas, an abundance of uranium, rare earth minerals, gold, diamonds, millions of square miles of untapped resources, and fisheries galore.” Secretary of State Pompeo.
“The Arctic is changing fast. Global warming will change the environmental and economic landscapes of the region. New sea routes and easier access to natural resources will become a reality,” said Finnish Foreign Minister Timo Soini.

Vladimir Putin, President of the criminal enterprise known as Russia, said “Climate change brings in more favorable conditions and improves the economic potential of [the Arctic] region,” The melting of the polar ice cap … is seen as good news for Russia, whose ships are now able to navigate Arctic waters. This will also help open up exploration of the Arctic continental shelf, where substantial energy reserves still lie untapped.
